The Benefits of Keeping Conflict to a Minimum When Divorcing.

There are a number of ways for parties to keep conflict to a minimum, from the way in which you communicate to the steps you take in the legal process.

Try to keep in mind that the purpose of divorce is to formally and legally separate, both physically and financially as quickly and fairly as possible.

    Some Top Tips:

    1. Making allegations against the other party will only act to cause tension. Unless the allegations have a significant impact on your financial position, these should be set aside.
    2. Try to keep discussions factual and free of criticism.
    3. Fairness is essential, but fairness does not always mean equality. If one party lives with children for example, and the other will only be visiting them, their housing needs may be different.
    4. Try to ensure the divorce petition remains as uncontentious as possible. This will be helped by the long-awaited introduction of “no-fault divorce” in April 2022.
    5. Bear in mind that more legal fees will be incurred the longer finances are disputed. By reducing the conflict and reaching agreements at an earlier stage, more money is available to distribute between the parties to satisfy their needs.
